Inmate Scams:

We first want to preface that the vast majority of inmates are truly just seeking new friends and companions. That being said, there are still the few bad apples. Here is some knowledge to light your way to help prevent you from falling victim to an inmate scam.

  1. Sending Money to Inmates in General: If you ever receive some sort of form letter from an inmate to send money please take note. All basic needs for life are provided to inmates by the state or government, your hard earned tax dollars at work. In most cases even educational programs are provided to the inmates free of charge. Donating money to an inmate is a personal choice and if you decide to do so that's great, just please be aware of the following scams so it doesn't happen to you.

  2. ** NEW ** Inmate Phone Scam: This is for everyone, not just pen pals. Inmates who have access to pay phones in their prison call you collect and then tell you to dial *72 along with a phone number. Do not do this. This basically gives them control of you phone line to make local and long distance phone calls all at your expense. Here is one example of how they get you to dial the number they want.

"I was supposed to pick up my children from school. This was my only phone call and I dialed the wrong number. Will you please dial *72, and a number, so that I can check on my children?"

  3. Females Soon to be Released: We have heard this one several times. The female inmate says she is in love with her male pen pal. She send him letters saying how when she gets out she wants to come and be with him. All she needs is several hundred dollars for a bus/plane/train etc... ticket so she can come and be with him. The pen pal sends her the money and then of course he never sees or hears from the female inmate ever again. Instead of sending money for the ticket, offer to go and pick her up personally. If she is unwilling and pressures you for money, it's probably a scam.

  4. Straight Inmates posing as Gay Inmates on pen pal sites: It has recently been discovered that straight men are posting ads on multiple pen pal sites seeking gay pen pals. The reason is because they have found or feel that gay men are more cavalier with their money so they can easily fake their intent for a relationship with many gay men and have them all sending them money in prison on a regular basis.

If you think you have been scammed by an inmate on our website or think one may currently be scamming you, please contact us immediately.
